‘I’m not traditionally the most exercise type of person, but Urban Active was something completely different and a little bit crazy that wasn’t competitive, that you didn’t have to be overly skilled at. You could just go for it!’
The Urban Active Project is funded through the National Lottery from Sport England and other partners.
The aim of the project is to get more students and staff active and increase the number of people making sports participation a habit for life.
We offer, you the student the chance to take part in one of three ways; you can borrow equipment and make use of open space either at the university or beyond, join in weekly sessions on campus or at your halls of residence or try out a new sport at one of the themed events taking place either on campus, at the beach or at one of the sports venues.
Rachael Smales is the Urban Active Programme Coordinator. She said: “With the help of the Student Activators and volunteers I believe we have created an exciting, fun and innovative programme of activities and events that are centred around the students and gets them active.”
The project offers fun, social and engaging activities for students on and off campus in a number of different ways through the FLEXI, CLUB SOCIAL and EVENTS programmes.
‘There’s a bit of hype around it and people get involved and kind of forget they’re doing sport and getting active.’
Shamira, Sports Activator
